Xbox 360 impressions

Sunday April 23, 2006 @ 12:10 PM (PDT)

I finally nabbed myself an Xbox 360 yesterday. It came bundled with Project Gotham Racing 3 and Felicity picked up a copy of Ghost Recon, so we've been taking turns having our minds blown. My first impressions are as follows:

Good:

  • Console, accessories, system menus, and even the packaging are beautiful and elegant, like some kind of Apple product, only it came from Microsoft, which is just weird
  • Wireless controllers are sweet
  • 720p/1080i video rocks my socks
  • Dolby Digital 5.1 audio rocks my socks
  • Graphics (at least on the games I've played so far) are mind-blowing
  • Built-in support for streaming video and audio from other computers on the network is sweet

Bad:

  • Power supply is a monstrous, ugly beast with massive cords as thick as my thumb
  • Tilting the Xbox 360 while a game is inside (which the manual warns against, but which I did anyway without thinking) results in a horrific GRRRRCHUNKACHUNKACHUNKACHUNKACSCCCRRRRRR noise and instantly converts the game disc into a lovely new coaster
  • Game lineup is still sorely lacking over 5 months after the console's release

Comments

Yea, I played a 360 only once at Circuit City, and the graphics of Call of Duty was amazing. I haven't owned a console since the first PlayStation, but I plan to get a PS3 with my roommate when I go off to college this fall, I have a feeling it'll be worth the wait.

It would be Full Auto, if you like driving around at crazy speeds and having shotguns/machine guns/rocket launchers attched to the front of your car and blowing stuff up.
