Slashdot overflows its comments table

Thursday November 09, 2006 @ 10:18 AM (PST)

Slashdot has temporarily disabled comment threading because they've got so many comments that their comments table (which uses a MySQL mediumint for parent ids) has overflowed. This is one of those theoretical limits I've always tried to plan for in my own software but never imagined I'd actually run into. I bet they feel pretty silly right now.

Comments

..They should perhaps feel a bit silly, and the amount of comments have lien dangerously close for a while now, so it's a wonder they didn't pre-rectify it, so to speak, before it finally struck.

Heu; you better upgrade the backend here lest some midnight comment t(h)reads on the cat's tail.. ;) [The cat slept up there on the pavement previously; -now there's a sealion, or whatever it chooses to be..]
