Sidekicked Sidekick

Tuesday May 13, 2003 @ 07:09 PM (PDT)

Well, it finally happened. My T-Mobile Sidekick finally bit the dust. I went for a nice leisurely stroll in the park today after work, and when I got back to the car, my Sidekick’s LCD was cracked and discolored. Since I’ve never dropped it or whacked it on anything, my best guess is that the temperature change from the air conditioned car to the warm sunny outside weather stressed the LCD too much. What a crappy piece of hardware.

Let me guess, you didn't get their insurance so that you can get a replacement?

I didn't get the insurance. They'll replace it for free if they determine that the damage was caused due to a defect or normal wear and tear, but they also said that a cracked LCD is automatically considered dropping damage, which they'll charge me $70 for.

It's really a pretty nasty scam. If you search the forums here, you'll see that many other people have had the exact same thing happen. The LCDs on these things crack due to temperature changes, but T-Mobile doesn't want to acknowledge that. The second-tier customer care representative I spoke with even lied and said they had no record of this ever having happened before.

Time to get evil and threaten class action!!

Seriously though, there's got to be some way to not be fined for something that can be proven not to have happened. dropping damage is a rather obvious and easy to recognize damage pattern. If they don't go about fixing an obviously known defect they're definately setting themselves up for a lawsuit, especiall since they're automaticly charging everyone it happens to $70.
