Self-hosting on a residential DSL line is wonderful (especially if you're not the one paying for it) until the connection goes down for two days and you can't even call the ISP because they forgot to turn their phones on.
About thirty minutes ago I placed an order for a dedicated server at a real data center with gobs of bandwith and a 100% guaranteed uptime service-level agreement. Of course, immediately after I placed the order, wonko.com came back online. But I'm gonna go through with it anyway, because I'm sick of these DSL shenanigans.
Now I just need to figure out some way to pay for it.

Sell your....
body to science! Although you might die in the process, so if you do can I have your server?
Re: Your Body
On behalf of Science I regret to inform you that we will not be making a competitive bid for your corporeal self, living or otherwise. That is all.
100% in agreement.
I used to host my own business website on my DSL connection. Big mistake. For $5 / month I have a host with 99.99% uptime and is even personal enough that I can ICQ them if I have a question / problem.
Re: 100% in agreement.
I'll be paying quite a bit more than $5 a month, but since this will allow me to manage my own server (I wouldn't have it any other way), I think it'll be worth it. I've also got a few ideas for offsetting some of the costs.
SPIIIIIIIIME!
You going through Spime?
Re: SPIIIIIIIIME!
Whatnow?
Now now...
Don't play silly with me, young man! I was, of course, referring to Kaile's webhost company Spime.
Re: Now now...
Well holy crap. I had no idea Kaile was involved in any such thing. But no, I'm using Sprocket Networks.
Oh well.
The datacenter is about a half-mile or a mile from your complex. Spime!
