Movie industry pirates own movies, blames consumers

Friday October 24, 2003 @ 10:49 AM (PDT)

According to the New York Times, an AT&T Labs study has shown that nearly 80% of 300 pirated movies that were distributed online and found during the study appeared online well before the release of DVDs to consumers, suggesting that the movies were being pirated by movie industry insiders, and not by consumers as the MPAA would have us believe.

But of course, it’s much easier to incriminate your customers and blame the resulting drop in sales on piracy than it is to fix the problems within your own distribution structure. How’s that Bible verse go? “Why do you notice the splinter in your neighbor’s eye but not the plank in your own eye?”

If anyone can find it, I’d love to see a link to the actual study.

Matthew 7:3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

King James -- grossly inaccurate but greatly euphonious.

why didn't you change the orange/red to a blue yet! GRR... i like the new font for the post title though, gj

The data comes from a paper called “Analysis of Security Vulnerabilities in the Movie Production and Distribution Process,” written by Patrick McDaniel, Simon Byers, Lorrie Cranor and Dave Kormann. You can view a pdf of the paper here: http://lorrie.cranor.org/pubs/drm03-tr.pdf

When I first read the title, I read it wrong. I read it as ((Movie industry pirates) own movies), blames consumers. Not as (Movie industry) pirates own movies..
I was wondering why people would blame movie industry pirates for owning movies. That would be like blaming normal pirates for owning gold or something.
