The eclectic musings of a bitter software engineer.

I love E

E is my new favorite text editor.

It's been around for a while, but it just recently started gaining a lot of momentum when the author made it his mission to turn e into TextMate for Windows.

In addition to supporting TextMate themes and bundles, e has an unlimited, branching undo buffer and built-in support for personal revision control, both of which are impossible to do without once you start using them.

If you write code in Windows, you owe it to yourself to try e.

Isn't it funny how the guy in the E screencast has a distinct Danish accent? :o)

I noticed that. Danish people are geniuses.

So far, I have noticed the following:

Installer has grammatical errors in it.

Main window ignores my Windows theme settings and goes for the standard annoying shiny XP look for the tabs. (I use the "Classic" theme.) At least the menu bar is standard.

Program ignores standard Windows keyboard shortcut conventions, opting for its own set.

There is no multi-line search and replace dialog. There are (insanely complex) shortcut keys for changing the syntax highlighting for the current file type, yet the option to use regular expressions in search and replace is hidden behind a click-only (i.e. not accessible from the keyboard at all) dropdown menu.

I'm sure there are a ton more of these, but I'm going to stop here.

Why are there shortcut keys for just about every isanely specialized function under the "Bundles" menu, yet no shortcut keys for something as simple as "shift text left" and "shift text right"?!

I've been using TextPad for years.

I should probably say more about that: I've been using TextPad for years and found that it's more than fancy enough for my tastes. I don't do any heavy PHP coding, just normal HTML and CSS coding.

The chap said "E makes editing faster but I noticed he was heading for
the mouse a lot. At risk of fuelling a flame war I would say (without
actually having used E) that a good Emacs user is faster (and probably
more productive) than a good E user.

Another thing, why on earth do developers use such search unfriendly
names like E:
