Happy birthday wonko.com

Thursday April 01, 2004 @ 12:19 AM (PST)

Today is wonko.com’s fifth birthday. No joke. Five years ago, the site looked something like this. It’s come a long way since then. Yay me.

It seems one of your script kiddie admirers think he's a super-duper bad-ass since he managed to break into your server. What can I say? Obviously, the perpetrator isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier, since it's fairly obvious that he has brought himself into some serious trouble, just to pull a stupid prank.

Breaking into people's servers is illegal, and tends to infuriate the owners, not to mention the owners' friends, who in this case count a great number of computer professionals. This, in turn, means that the script kiddie in question will be tracked down and, if he's lucky, will simply be reported to his ISP and have his Internet account closed.

Morons like this simply shouldn't be allowed on the net.

If your server is located in Texas I can probably help you out. This is definatly a breach of computer security under Texas Penal Code 33.02.

I spent half an hour this morning verifying that there were no root vulnerabilities in the software I had listening to external ports. Granted, it needed to be done anyway, but it was a pain.

I realized about half way through that it was most likely a hoax, this being the first of april. But I finished anyway.
This is a pretty good prank (assuming it is one) - but I hope someone tells wonko before he reformats the HD and starts over.

I did something more simple - set the screen savers at my office to a bitmap of the blue screen of death (all of them are MS Windows) at varying intervals from 1-10 minutes.

Happy birthday and April foolishness...
I believe that the green on black is a better color scheme - you should stick with that. Or maybe Black on Green. It just needs to be a brighter green. (Brighter!)
