Four-and-a-half out of five senses ain't bad

Friday December 01, 2006 @ 09:20 AM (PST)

I woke up this morning to find that I was mostly deaf in my right ear. No amount of yawning or forceful repressurization of my ears resulted in any improvement. There's no pain yet, but so far it looks like this is shaping up to be some kind of ear infection. That or I'm actually going deaf. Crap.

Did your cold ever actually go away?

It could be something as simple as an ear wax clot. If there's no pain, it is unlikely to be an infection. Trust me, ear infections hurt. In any case, have your doc take a look.

Believe me, I know ear infections hurt. But the last one I had started off slowly too, and the pain didn't start until a day or two into it.

My hearing seems to have improved gradually throughout the day. Either that or the other ear is going deaf too. At any rate, they both seem to be about equal now.

You're counting your sense of sight as a full sense now? ;P

My sense of sight is correctable to 20/20 with glasses. :P

Get some Sudafed. And loratadine (Clarinex). It's the time of year when your head gets stuffed up due to allergies, and just because your nose isn't running doesn't mean you don't have them. Stuffed-up ears are often my first symptom.

Note: the Sudafed is to dry up the fluid. The loratidine is to stop what caused it.

I got an ear infection once during a cold after I just blew my nose too hard and my ear never depressurized. If you don't treat it right, you can suffer a degree of permanent hearing loss. I ended up taking a pill steroid, antibiotics, and loading up on citrus and chicken soup. It recovered pretty quickly but really sucked while I had it.

I run a hearing loss and tinnitus related website and at our blog we get hundreds of reports evey month of how untreated inner ear infections can cause major damage, often leading to hearing loss and tinnitus.

So if you suspect you have an ear infection, get it seen to quickly, it's just not worth the risk if you don't

Thanks for the concern, everyone. I'm pretty sure it wasn't an ear infection; my hearing returned to normal within a few hours, and I haven't felt any pain or had any symptoms since then. Probably just a false alarm.
