Firefox 0.9 rocks my socks

Tuesday June 15, 2004 @ 12:27 PM (PDT)

Mozilla released Firefox 0.9 today, and I’m digging it. It’s like someone woke up and realized that real live people were actually using the software. It’s finally polished enough that I think Grandma could use it. Maybe even Grandpa, with a little patience. Among other things, I’m particularly pleased with the new default theme (which finally succeeds in not looking clunky, immature, or gaudy) and the integration of the Adblock extension (which I haven’t been able to live without for about a year now).

I approve.

0.8

I am using 0.8 right now... of course, for me, that's pretty up-to-date.

Would somebody try to get this theme to work for Firefox .9?

I can't figure out if I am doing something wrong or if it just isn't compatible.

Luna isn't compatible with 0.9, sadly. It's a great theme, but the author doesn't seem to keep it updated anymore.

Yeah, I'm sticking with .8 until Luna is updated to work with .9, because I'm insane.

My socks are not rocked. I require a working spellchecker for textboxes. Mozilla has it. I can get one for 0.8. 0.9 appears to not support it. Grr.

Waaaaait. Are you telling me that your dramatic improvement in spelling is not a result of osmosis from me? It's a technological advance? Noooooo!

You'll have to be patient. There were quite a few changes to the extension system in 0.9. The author of the 0.8 spellcheck extension just needs to update it for 0.9. You might even be able to do it yourself. It shouldn't be too hard.

I tried 0.8 and hated it. It always crashed on my and eat ram, but since 0.9 came out, I installed it yesterday and haven't looked back. Good bye internet explorer!

Perhaps my favorite comparison of IE to Firefox is to look up the vulnerability listings of each on SecurityFocus. The latest version of IE (6.0 SP 1) has one hundred and seventy one listed vulnerabilities. Firefox has exactly one, and it's a rendering bug.

hey, thats a good lookin' one, thanks for the link.

I'm suprised I can't just rename a few .png files and get it to work. Well, I can't even skin Winamp so I guess I shouldn't be suprised.

Is that counting the lack of basic functionality expected in a mail client in 2004, like proper handling of MIME and reply-to-mailing-list?

Firefox is a web browser, not a mail client.
