Costco only accepts American Express

Friday March 10, 2006 @ 02:33 PM (PST)

Riddle me this, Batfuck: Why is it that Costco.com accepts all major credit cards, while Costco retail locations only accept American Express? Where is the goddamn logic there?

To add insult to injury, there is no signage at Costco to alert you to this, nor do I recall being warned of it when I purchased my Costco membership. No, they didn't bother to tell me this until I had lugged a 37-inch TV to the checkout line. And then they tried to get me to sign up for the Costco AmEx card and an executive Costco membership. To add even more insult, Costco and Sam's Club are the only retail locations that carry the TV I want to buy, the Costco.com website doesn't sell it, and to my knowledge there isn't a single Sam's Club in the state of Oregon.

So my only choices now are to buy the damn thing online from the manufacturer for $100 more or pay for it in cash at Costco and forego the extra warranty protection I'd get by paying for it with a credit card. Frankly, I'm really leaning towards paying the extra $100 just so I can avoid buying it from Costco. What kind of retail business in the 21st motherfucking century only accepts one major credit card, and a shitty one at that?

You know what? That's exactly what I'll do. Costco, you just lost an easy $1499 sale, and there's a good chance I won't be renewing my membership. Nice work.

Don't they allow you to return a product at any time? For any reason, as long as you have the origonal packing material.

Batman and Superman are the worst comics I ever read. They're stupid characters. A couple of gay guys in tights who spout dumbass catchphrases like a third-rate Cheech and Chong or Bill and Ted. Fuck Batman and Superman. Fuck them up their stupid asses.

A am Wonko's Ben Affleck, and I am seriously pissed to the point of popping over not being consulted about the "Magnoliafan" comment. It is my duty and privilege, as Wonko's Ben Affleck, to read this line aloud to Batman and Superman to give them any reason whatsoever to go on their merry way toward Hollywood. With this breach of trust we may never even here the words "pie fucker," which will play holy hell with Jason Biggs' career. Maybe to the point of him still having one.

In short, consult Wonko's Ben Affleck before posting such flagrant forays into his territory or face the consequences (which shall remain nondisclosed to add more punch to an otherwise empty threat).

Hi. I'm looking for Ryan Wonko. Recently, I attempted to learn the language C++. And when I thought of how I first tried to learn PHP, it was from editing Ryan Wonko's script, a type of CMS. I wanted to tell him hello and ask him what he says about remembering me (Isaac) and what he says about my blog http://isaac.tblog.com/ .
I hope you're still alive.
Cheers,

When was the last time that you shopped at Costco Ryan. They have not taken any other Credit Card in a long time. They will take Visa, MS as ATM. They used to take Discover but stopped.

I usually use my debit MasterCard to buy things, so I've shopped at Costco many times and never actually tried to use a credit card there until now.

This is what I call AMERICAN REGRESS! You just saved me
a 90 mile trip to the nearest COSTCO and cost them a
$1499.00 + 179. sale for a computer and printer! This is
what the Easter season is for--being Saved. Time is more
precious than headaches and money and this is the only
time I have been saved from both a tremendous headache and for a retiree, saved from spending a a tremendous amount of money for a product I can buy cheaper elsewhere! I'd have put the whole e-mail stuf but I don't want to be "Cook[i]ed"
or Spammed by AMERICAN REGRESS. There was a recent time
when I was an American Express Preferred Customer and was
proud of it. --NEVER AGAIN!

do you really think costco's CEOs are gonna miss your $1500 purchase or your membership fee-they are a multi billion dollar corporation. instead of pissin & moanin like a little bitch pay cash, use your debit or get an amex-and if you're worried about spending an extra $100 maybe you should get thier executive membership and their amex so you can earn some of that cash back

I got this very same shock, and I was angry for the rest of the day. Ive heard of places not accepting amex, but ive never heard of anyone not accepting visa or mastercard if they accepted credit. This was maddening because I do not see why costco would look to exclude the most widely used cards. I refuse to apply for amex, because I do not need it. Costco will just lose my business!

You Cheapskate Bitch.
You find a product you want at a great price at a store conveniently located to you (for which you've willingly paid a membership fee) and you have the audacity to complain that Costco "only accepts American Express"; after conveniently ignoring this published fact at several locations within every store. Your ignorance of the rules is no excuse to bitch about them after the fact.
Why don't you just steal the TV you want. That seems to be the bargain you're after.
Have a nice day, Bitch.
Sincerely,

I've had the experience, no signage to indicate only American Express taken there and outside for gas they'll not take cash, for my security they say! Well, I ended up not getting gas. When I bought a cake inside I was accosted by the same woman who tried to convince me to get the AmEX card when I signed up. I don't want to be forced to use it and nobody can force me to get one. I'll skirt around most of the shopping at Costco until collusion is worked out there with their Credit Card Company.

Two things:

#1 - You don't need the extra warranty protection that comes with buying a new TV on your credit card if you purchase it from Costco. This is due to their incredible return policy. If AT ANY TIME, you are unsatisfied with your TV... return it. 3 years, 5 years, 7 years... whatever.

#2 - If Costco really pissed you off that much, just cancel your membership. They'll refund the entire amount if you're not satisfied.

Amex is far from a shitty card. They're about the only major credit card that is more likely to side with the consumer and not the merchant in a dispute.

Amongst other things... you'd probably change your mind if you actually had an AMEX card.

AMEX and Costco have cut a deal on the processing fee's. Credit cards charge merchants like 30 cents plus 3-5% of the total purchase value of that sale. So, your TV would cost more if they took it. That might not seam like a big deal to you. But if you were a business and spending $500,000 per year there, 3% is a big deal. Oh, if it weren't for the business sales, Costco wouldn't be around. You could pay $200 more at Best Buy, then buy their extended warranty. But, like others have said, you can just bring the TV back to Costco and get another one.

CostCo and American Express have a contract to Co-Brand for each other with other perks associated (i.e. large average charge boosts Amex's average charge for negotating other contracts). Not that many years ago Discover had the CostCo contract. Amex under bid Discover for that contract (around the time they lost the Gov't contract to Visa), that is why the stores only take Amex. If the didn't they'd be in breach of contract and Amex does enforce its contracts. Look back to the British Airway deals years ago. Don't kid yourself that the deal is for the consumers. CostCo and American Express are exchanging benefits between senior management levels. Senior management in companys do a c**p load of bartering, and back scratching. I've got nothing against CostCo, but many against American-IBM-Indian Express. Ken while a brillant man, allowed IBM to take over technologies and they've driven it down so bad, I'm not sure how long, if ever, it will take to fully recover from that infamous decision. Cheers.

Also, what's so hard about signing up for a card?

the good thing about the amex from costco is theres no annual fee ever and ability to carry a balance not like other amex cards and besides you earn points and at costco theres lifetime warranties on tvs best buy or circuit city cant top that so stop your bitching and moaning and get your money right if not get a amex

Obviously this guy is a complete idiot. Anyone who would pay more to avoid buying anything Costco doesn't have all their marbles. I would pay more TO buy it from Costco. Costco has a wonderful thing going and if Costco doesn't carry it, I don't need it.

The executive membership is an excellent product as well.

The guy's an idiot.

Wish I saw this before I went to costco for a membership, I didnt know they only accept Amex. Amex doesnt have a card that can match the benefits on mine, so theres no way in hell I'm getting an inferior card just to shop at Costco. After they told me only Amex credit cards are accepted I just walked out. Bastards dont even give out bags anyway.

Costco only accepts Amex credit cards buy you can pay with a Visa or MasterCard debit card. Also, there are plenty of other places that accept only Amex - Neiman Marcus is best known for this. I suppose there aren't any of those in Oregon either..

COSTCO got in bed with the devil AmEx and is now the leading merchandizer for AmEx's products -- eg. credit cards with corrupt practices, ZERO "dispute resolution" and financial investments that feature private prisons.

Anyone who is a member of Costco knows they only take AMEX. This is nothing new. When you signed up how did you pay? duh! They tell you right there.

The reason they take it online is it's only one transaction point, not 1000s. It makes a huge difference. Second how do you use cash online? hello! (and no, a "cash card" or "check card" is NOT the same. ATM cards (the non-logoed cards) are a nightmare online, and few if any businesses take them online.

For those who don't know the reason for NOT accepting cards, it is the transaction charge for each swipe. If you operate on very thin margins like Costco, and Sam's do; those costs can easily consume your profit margin. Also when they started in business, it was originally businesses only, and they used Checks.

AMEX (like Discover w/Sam's) cut a deal. AMEX however came up with a better promotion for COSTCO.

...

They do this because they have a deal with AmEx. Stores are charged a percentage of each transaction when customers use credit cards. AmEx did a deal where if Costco doesn’t accept Visa or Mastercard, AmEx would not charge any transaction fees. AmEx usually charges higher than Visa or Mastercard. Coscto accepts Visa and Mastercard debit cards, though. It saves them a lot of money since they can’t afford to pay the extra credit card fees for the other cards.

Most of you guys are just repeating what the previous people said. I have a Business Gold American Express and ive been pretty happy with it, but I only use it in emergencies, or if I have to make a big purchase (4k+) so I mostly use my Visa or MasterCard. I wish CostCo would take Visa or MasterCard credit cards, but it doesnt stop me from shopping there.

Its simple: if you cant pay for it now, then why buy it?
