AIM protocol change breaks Miranda

Monday January 22, 2007 @ 10:16 AM (PST)

If you use Miranda and have been wondering why you haven't been receiving messages from your AIM contacts (or maybe you haven't been wondering because you didn't notice), it's because AOL changed the protocol. You need to update Miranda. If you're using a development build, you'll need to grab the AIM plugin from the 0.6.3 release.

For some reason I had to go digging to find this out. It's not mentioned on the front page of Miranda's website, which just has a generic "Miranda IM v0.6.3 Released" blurb that doesn't mention the AIM fix unless you click through. Argh.

If you've been sending me messages on AIM recently and have been wondering why I've been ignoring you, this is why.

Comments

Thanks for reminding me of Miranda with this post. I had tried it before a while ago, but now it is looking much better. I like.

Haven't seen any of my AIM contacts on Trillian in a while, maybe it's time to check for an update. Anyone whose used both have any comments on their likes/dislikes of either? How does Miranda compare?

Trillian is bloated, buggy, relatively hard to extend, and costs money. Miranda is lightweight, reliable, has thousands and thousands of high-quality plugins, and is free. That's about the gist of it.

The silence on AIM annoyed me, too. I found out the hard way--BEFORE reading this post--that AIM under Miranda IM would not work.

And now, I'd like to use WebSite-Watcher to monitor the AIM plugin for changes, except there is none to monitor! Why is the AIM protocol plugin not listed anywhere on the Miranda IM site, even where you'd expect it to be?
