A house for wonko

Wednesday August 27, 2003 @ 12:11 AM (PDT)

Lissell and Bedrick and I have been scoping out rental homes for a while now. Tonight we looked at one that we didn’t think we’d like, but which we ended up applying for.

It’s a two-story, three bedroom home in one of those new neighborhoods where the houses are five feet apart and the yard is roughly the size of a largeish postage stamp. Somehow, though, the place seems nice and roomy on the inside, despite the cramped quarters outside. The construction seems to be good quality, the neighborhood is nice (if a bit crowded), and the landlord says some of the neighbors might have open wi-fi nodes.

I think it could be a nice place to live.

I moved into a house over a year ago, with a big yard, and it's been a pain to mow.

So, good call on applying for the house and remember that it'll take 5 or 10 minues to mow the lawn!

You can't move there! I'd have to stop going 55 around that little side street that connects Baseline and 173rd. It's a very handy option sometimes.

What little side street? Baseline and 173rd connect at an intersection...

I think "A House for Wonko" sounds like a picture book title.

Once there was a little bear named Wonko, who did not have a house. The forest was cold and dark, and sometimes it rained...

I have some friends who own a house in Newberg with a nice big backyard. One of them went to Washington DC for an internship for 3 months. Her husband ignored the yard when she was gone. When she got back, the weeds had taken over the backyard and were, I kid you not, 8 feet tall. I helped her wack weeds a little, and it was a lot of work! And we only got a little section of the yard done! Owning a small yard definitely is a plus in this category.

Go north at the intersection of Baseline and 170th, and take the first left. Technically it's faster to take baseline to 173rd, but if there's a long line in the left lane, it's quite nice.

Not that it has rained nearly enough recently.... I'm tired of this summer stuff!

Bah. Just go get some military surplus Agent Orange. That'll take care of the weeds.

Seriously though, I think it's a lot more work if you let it go for an extended period. If you get things in control and keep them that way, you don't have to do that much work. Landscaping with native plants helps too. My parents have a large back yard, and they do nothing but mow it. It has lawn, trees and native plants. And ivy, but that's not their fault. It's from the neighbors. Don't put ivy in your yard for any reason, and don't live next to ivy if you can help it. It's a bad, bad plant.
Could be a million reasons. Reason one would be that I get tons of email, so I have to be selective about which ones I answer. First I answer email from people I know, next I answer email from people asking simple questions about software I've written (as long as their questions aren't answered in the documentation already).

If you're one of the two hundred people who keep emailing me questions about PHP, the reason I haven't answered is because I'm not the PHP documentation. While I'd normally love to help, I just don't have time to offer general programming advice to everyone who asks.

Then again, if you just sent me an email that didn't seem to require a response, chances are I didn't respond because I didn't see any reason to. Don't take it personally.

I ASK U SIMPLE QUES NOT PHGP N U DONT RESPODN YYY

Wow Wonko, you have stalker fanboys. I guess that's one of the dangers of running a site like this.

You know, if this guy's spelling is as good in email as it is on this forum, your spam filters might have dropped his message.

We may not know who he is, but we know he runs FreeBSD 4.3 (or so), has a number of open ports, including Qmail and Apache 1.3.27, and traveled here from a time before punctuation or manners.

He may, however, be the Steven Harris of Warren Michigan who is listed as the admin and tech contacts for rawb.com. Or that might be a pseudonym to mask his time-traveling identity.

I think we should extend our hospitality to this weary time-traveler. Is there anything we can get you? Spell checker? Book on modern English?

Remind me sometime to tell you about the guy who wanted to buy my dirty underwear.

I dunno, I think maybe he IS from our time, but from the planet T'roll.

wrong

mandrake 9.1

i run sendmail, not qmail

right about apache 1.3.27

nice try though

and nice try looking up the domain, it's not mine! :)

Californian Crackerbox! It's like an apartment, but better ventilated so the neighborhood goes up faster. And I bet the streets wind for no reason, making it difficult or impossible for fire service to get there.
