Name wonko's new kitty

Sunday June 15, 2003 @ 02:28 AM (PDT)

kitty I have a kitty! I came home tonight and she was waiting for me, all cute and helpless and full of tiny little mew noises. Mom got her for me, for no reason at all other than that I guess she knew I wanted a cat. She has beautiful grey fur and is every bit as playful and curious as you’d expect a kitten to be. Problem is, now I’ve got to think up a name for her. I suck at naming things. I have a pet snake named Monkey. That’s how badly I suck at naming things.

Your mission, gentle reader, is to watch this short video of the kitty adjusting to her new home. Then, think up a name for her. Post it in a comment. If I like your choice, the kitty will get a name and you’ll get the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve brought joy to a tiny kitten’s heart. Now go to it!

Update: Here’s another video of the kitty playing with a toy mouse. She’s sitting on my lap watching the screen with fascination as I type this. A few minutes ago I watched the video and she jumped out of my lap and onto my desk, where she sat with her eyes affixed to the screen until the video ended. I like this cat.

Update Part Deux: I’ve decided to name her Qubit. Thanks, Brunslo! The name fits her well, I think, because not only does she bounce around the room like a subatomic particle in an accelerator, she also likes to crawl into boxes. She seems to have a very keen grasp of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle as well.

Update Part Trois: Apparently kittens don’t sleep, and they never stop crying either. This should make for an interesting week.

charlie! as in charly chalk, but charlie charcoal.

Ho ho, how imaginative :P Probably not the best person to ask seens as my grey cat is called 'Kitty' and I was up for naming my girlfriends black and white cat Milkshake McBoingBoing (its called pumpkin now instead).

But by jeebs mister wonko, that's one cute kitling you got there. =)

Knowing your taste for the weird and dramatic, here's a name from Greek mythology:

Graeae. the Graise.

Three hoary witches, daughters of Ceto and Phorcys, with gray hair from birth, and one eye and one tooth among them, which they used in turn. The three, Dino, Enyo, and pephredo, were surprised by Perseus and gave him the information that led him to the abode of their sister the Gorgons.

So that's my suggestion: Enyo.

The "Sandman" story "The Dream of a Thousand Cats"? I'm not sure that we ever learn the name of any of those cats, but your new kitty looks an awful lot like one of the cats from the story.

How about Sam, as in Samantha.
Perhaps Nimitz (I know it's a female alright, I just really like the name...)
Maybe Honor (So maybe I've read too many of the damn books ok, just get off my case!)
Why not Pion? Or Higgs, perhaps Qubit?
I got it! Ripley!
Marion, Wilhelmina (Willie for short), or Elsa maybe?
Amidala, Padmé, Leia, Mace Windu?
How about *Insert Bond Girl Here*? Or just Kit from Night Rider.

Just my $2.34.

I came up with this name for a snake, but it would work for a cat, too, methinks.

My idea: Geisha. I also like lissel and GreyStork's ideas.

We just got two new kittens ourselves, one gray and one orange. We're going with either Smoke or Stormy for the gray one (and Fire or Sunny for the orange to match) but that's very cliché and not recommended.

By the way, I tried to help you name your snake and it *didn't work* even though you said you liked the name I suggested.

I can't remember what name you had suggested now. What was it?

My own cat, Sky, was also pretty interested in the videos. She is equally fascinated by the connection between what I do with my fingers on the keyboard and my hand on the mouse, and what happens up there, on the screen. Perhaps cats are all fascinated by multimedia that way - or maybe it's specifically gray cats who are the geeky ones? A survey would be in place, here...

Oddly enough, I was going to suggest Ash also.. but that's mostly because I've just finished watching Avalon.

The name I suggested for a snake was Sith.

We cannot watch your videos, because you are a Microsoft running dog (hiss scratch!)

Suggestions:
Drusilla because cute things should have ominous names.

Greymalkin Always a witchy classic.

Beatrice because she looks like one.

Or you could name her something big and fearsome, like Xena, or Brunhilde, or Athena. Ooh, she looks a titch like an Athena, too.

You really should get to know your cat's personality first so you can pick a name that fits him or her best. No sense naming a cat something cute and fluffy if it's going to turn out a terror! (unless, of course you're going for the whole irony of it...)

I think if you just wait awhile the right name will come to you (or any friends that happen to come over to fawn over the little thing...) :)

Hugh Jass?

Humpy McThrashabout?

Cawd Peace?

I think the next cat I get is going to be named, "Bullets McDeath", considering it's what I use online the most.

Your cat is so cute. Look's like my kitty...

Do you know what kind of breed she is? Looks sort of like a russian blue...

We think she's a mutt. I don't know enough about cat breeds to tell what she's got in her. She's 100% cute and playful though. And she likes to sit on my shoulder and watch me type. ;)

Just as long as she doesn't instinctively act on her inner agression and try to eat the fast-moving small things, it is cute.
