<3 WoW FTW!

A few weeks ago Loren finally convinced me to try World of Warcraft. I had avoided it for almost a year, not because I thought it looked stupid, but because I had a gut feeling that it would consume me. I avoided other MMORPGs because they just looked dumb, but WoW was different. I knew, deep down inside, that there would be no escape once I started playing.

One of the reasons I finally agreed to play was that I missed Loren. He's in San Francisco being a hotshot physicist at Stanford, so I never get to see him. But now, thanks to the wondrous Intertron, we can own noobs together whenever we want. And thanks to Ventrilo and VoIP, we can talk to each other while we do it. The irony of it all is that since I started playing World of Warcraft, I've spent a lot more time socializing.

WoW is almost a perfect match for me. I don't have tons of free time and I don't want to spend all of my free time playing the game, but unlike other MMORPGs, I don't have to in order for it to be rewarding. When I do want to play, I can have fun playing solo or I can have even more fun playing with friends.

More importantly, though, WoW is very pretty and very complex. It's not just a nice GUI for a spreadsheet application like some other RPGs; it's actually a world that you can immerse yourself in. Not in a creepy way, but in the way you might immerse yourself in the world of a good book or movie. If all you want to do is kill monsters, you can do that, but if you want to go a little deeper, there are more layers for you to explore. I like that.

I don't know how long I'll keep enjoying the game. Maybe it'll get old in a month or two. But for the moment it's a lot of fun, and I'm kinda wishing I hadn't avoided it for so long.

I always got bored around level 18, no matter what kind of character I had.

Hmm. At the moment I'm a level 30 Rogue and I'm still having tons of fun. Whenever questing and killing things gets old, I just buy and sell at the auction house. So far I've got just over 100 gold and counting...

Tried a human warrior (got him to 20), human priest (got to about 7 before I realized this was not that class for me), human warlock (level 18), and a level 19 Night Elf hunter (original character).

All of them ended up getting old in the end. Maybe it's just my ADH- oh look, a bird...

I've been playing for more than a year now and my only word of advice is to never become the leader of a raiding guild! It will suck the life out of you! Other than that, WoW is a wonderful game.

I'm a dwarven rogue on Silver Hand named Frozz.

Loren dude, you should be WTS [Wang]x1. But what ever floats your boat.

That's the same reason I have made sure I do not get WOW. I know the second I play it I won't be able to stop for months on end.

WoW is like any MMO, it's very repetitive. The grind factor is very smooth up until 60, though one can argue that 60 is the real start of the game (experienced gamers can reach it in a matter of days). Yet the first levels are very addictive.

From level 60, you will be in a large guild and all your gaming experience will be to plan and organise large PvE raids. After a while, you may become officer and soon need to cope with your fellow player's moods, set up something to keep them interested, manage loot distribution over time, all of this with very little excitement in game.

After a while, it becomes pretty much like being a middle-manager in a large corporation. Personally, I got bored once my guild started farming Zul Gurub and Molten Core. PvP? Playing on a PvP server does not really gives you another gaming dimension. Surprise attacks and open battles disappeared with the whole concept of battlegrounds. Now it's only farming for faction, and it's quite tedious.

PVP

We play on a PVP server, and there are still quite a few open battles -- Ryan was in an impromptu skirmish that lasted a really long time, just two or three days ago. However, the main difference is that you can't grind, quest, or otherwise level your character without constantly being ganked and corpse-camped. I'd call THOSE 'surprise attacks', but I guess by now it's no longer a surprise :p

I've been thinking a lot about the benefits of PvP vs. PvE. In the lower and upper levels, being on a PvP server isn't a big deal. You're either in friendly territory all the time or you're high enough that you're not an appealing target for ganking. It's only for the middle levels (say 20 to 50 or so) that PvP is a big problem.

The tradeoff is that, at endgame, when there are no more solo quests to do and I don't have the patience to join a raiding guild and spend 8 hours of my weekend farming just to get loot that'll give me a stat bonus, being on a PvP server will give me an additional avenue for fun. Sure, I could do battlegrounds on a PvE server, but there's nothing like the thrill of spontaneous world PvP combat.

I'd love to be in a guild that raided Horde villages rather than doing instances. Of course, until that happens, I'll settle for running naked into a Horde lowbie zone and taking on all challengers until enough lowbies get together to kill me. Talk about entertaining.

WoW

I love it.

At times I get bored, especially at the higher level (49 warlock), but that's when I decide to play during my 10-15 minute free time(s). In the short run, it's not much...but, in the long run, I find myself leveling faster than I would have if I waited 'til I was interested again.

Good luck to ya'.

What can i say it's 08.32am and i here for hours getttin drunk with my friends.. WoW is such an amazin game and it has gottin mr off drugs and the like but it is an escape and like all escapes it has to be taken in moderation and once you find a healthy balance it is a very rewarding game no matter how much you accomplish in rl.

I have a prob with finishing what i start as alotta ppl have but i have accomplished a 70 epic in my WoW time while making sure to take college and friends first and that is a great feat and i thank WoW for proving to me i can do it i can acomplish the things in life which i start. i think you should all do the same but plz differenciate between rl and WoW if you do tht it can be very rewarding.
